Moderate earthquake shakes Tehran without immediate reports of damage
A moderate earthquake measuring 4.6 in magnitude struck near Tehran on Tuesday, according to Iranian state media citing the country’s seismological authorities.
The tremor occurred at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers and affected areas located between the Iranian capital and the northern province of Mazandaran. Officials said there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant material damage following the earthquake.
Residents in several neighborhoods reportedly felt the shaking for a few seconds, prompting concern among citizens in one of the region’s most densely populated urban areas. Emergency teams and local authorities monitored the situation closely after the seismic event to assess possible impacts on infrastructure and public safety.
Iran is considered one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries because it sits on several major tectonic fault lines. Small and moderate earthquakes occur regularly across different parts of the country, while stronger tremors in past years have caused major destruction and loss of life.
Experts often warn that densely populated cities such as Tehran remain vulnerable to seismic risks due to urban expansion and the concentration of residential and commercial buildings. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of preparedness measures, emergency planning and public awareness to reduce risks during future earthquakes.
Although this latest tremor did not appear to cause major consequences, it once again highlighted concerns about seismic activity in the region and the importance of continuous monitoring by geological and emergency services.
