Amazon-owned Zoox has achieved a landmark breakthrough in the autonomous mobility sector after receiving the first U.S. regulatory approval to commercially operate paid robotaxis built without a steering wheel or traditional driver controls. The decision represents a major step toward the commercialization of purpose-built autonomous transportation in the United States.

The authorization, granted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), allows Zoox to begin limited commercial deployment of its uniquely designed driverless vehicles under strict regulatory oversight, setting a new benchmark for the rapidly evolving robotaxi industry.

Regulatory milestone for autonomous transportation

Unlike most autonomous vehicle developers that adapt existing passenger cars, Zoox has engineered its robotaxis from the ground up with no steering wheel, pedals or manual driving controls.
