Fuel prices fall in Morocco after months of steady increases
Fuel prices in Morocco declined on May 1, marking the first drop after several months of continuous increases. Across multiple service stations, diesel prices fell by about one dirham per liter, while gasoline recorded a slightly larger decrease of around 1.10 dirhams. Average prices now stand near 14.50 dirhams per liter for diesel and 14.40 dirhams for gasoline.
The price reduction follows a prolonged surge driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that intensified toward the end of February. Over the past three months, fuel costs rose sharply, with diesel increasing by more than 4.70 dirhams per liter and gasoline gaining close to 3 dirhams. This upward trend placed sustained pressure on transport costs and household budgets.
In Casablanca, most fuel distributors adjusted their prices quickly in response to the downward revision. Price differences between operators remain narrow. Diesel is available from about 14.47 dirhams per liter at some stations, while others set prices closer to 14.50 dirhams. Gasoline follows a similar pattern, ranging between 14.37 and 14.40 dirhams depending on the provider.
Not all stations updated their prices at the same pace. Some locations still display older, higher rates, reflecting delays in revising pricing boards. The uneven rollout highlights operational gaps in price transmission at the retail level.
The key question now concerns the durability of this decline. Future price movements will depend on global oil market trends, regional stability, and supply dynamics. Any renewed geopolitical disruption could reverse the current downward trajectory.
