F'murr's comic legacy celebrated in Strasbourg exhibition
The late French cartoonist Richard Peyzaret, known for his iconic comic series Génie des alpages, is being honored in Strasbourg with an anthology exhibition titled Hi-Yo c’est l’écho. Running until August 30, the exhibition showcases original comic plates, press illustrations, and posters from Peyzaret’s prolific career.
F'murr, who passed away in 2018 at the age of 72, created the absurdly humorous world of Athanase the shepherd, his intellectual dog, and a flock of mischievous sheep, a series that delighted readers across 14 volumes. The exhibition highlights both his signature comic work and his broader artistic talents, including Japanese-influenced illustrations and press drawings.
Born in Paris, F'murr was a pipe-smoking, introverted artist whose chance encounter with pastoral life in the French Alps inspired the series that would become his hallmark. As recounted by friends Barbara Pascarel and Élisabeth Walter, F'murr stumbled upon the inspiration while visiting his sister’s studio in the Deux Alpes, observing shepherds and their sheep. The humorous observation that the dog and sheep often did more than the shepherd himself sparked the creation of Génie des alpages, which was later published by the magazine Pilote.
Visitors to the Strasbourg exhibition can explore the evolution of F'murr’s artistic vision and enjoy the quirky charm that has made his comics beloved for generations.
