United States invites India to join the Artemis lunar exploration program

The United States has invited India to participate in the Artemis program, NASA’s ambitious initiative to expand human and scientific exploration of the Moon. The invitation was presented to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) during a meeting of the India-U.S. Working Group on Science and Technology Cooperation in Bengaluru.

According to the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, NASA proposed that ISRO join the international cooperation framework associated with the Artemis Accords. The two countries also discussed expanding the exchange of scientific information and strengthening cooperation in future space research.

The potential participation of India would represent another step in the growing space partnership between Washington and New Delhi. Cooperation between the two countries already covers several areas, including Earth observation, scientific research and human spaceflight technologies.

India has developed significant experience in lunar exploration through its Chandrayaan missions. Joining the Artemis framework could provide additional opportunities for Indian scientists and engineers to participate in international lunar projects and collaborate with other countries in space science and technology.

The discussions also focused on future human spaceflight. The United States and India have previously identified crewed space missions as an area with strong potential for deeper cooperation, reflecting the broader strategic relationship between the two countries.

The Artemis program was established by NASA to develop a long-term framework for lunar exploration. Beyond scientific research, the initiative aims to establish technologies and infrastructure that could support sustained human activity around and on the Moon.

The program is also viewed as a stepping stone toward future missions to Mars. Its objectives include studying the lunar environment, testing new technologies and developing experience that could eventually support more ambitious deep-space missions.

International cooperation is a central element of the Artemis initiative. Countries participating in the Artemis Accords agree to principles covering peaceful exploration, scientific cooperation, data sharing, transparency and responsible activities in space.

For India, closer involvement in Artemis could strengthen its position in international lunar exploration while giving its space sector access to new scientific and technological partnerships. It could also complement the country’s own ambitions to develop independent human spaceflight capabilities.

The proposed cooperation comes at a time when lunar exploration is attracting renewed international interest. Governments and space agencies are increasingly developing missions focused on the Moon as a scientific destination and as a potential testing ground for technologies needed for future exploration beyond Earth.

If India formally joins the Artemis cooperation framework, the move would further deepen the strategic relationship between the two countries and give Indian researchers a greater role in one of the world's most ambitious lunar exploration initiatives.
