Europe resumes flights to Baghdad after 35 years of suspension

Iraq’s Transport Ministry announced that Aegean Airlines, based in Greece, has become the first European airline in 35 years to land at Baghdad International Airport. The ministry described the flight as a turning point that marks Iraq’s reintegration into the European aviation network and signals a new chapter of revival for its air transport sector.

Direct flights between Europe and Baghdad had been suspended since the early 1990s following the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq’s then-leader, Saddam Hussein. The events that followed—including years of conflict, sectarian violence, and the rise of armed groups kept most international airlines away from the country.

More than three decades later, Iraq is showing signs of stabilization. The government is actively seeking to attract foreign investment and restore international confidence in its infrastructure and economy.

According to the ministry, Aegean Airlines will operate two weekly flights on the new Baghdad–Athens–Baghdad route, with plans to increase the frequency depending on passenger demand. Earlier this year, the Greek carrier resumed commercial services to Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s northern Kurdistan region, which has long been regarded as a more secure and stable area within the country.
