EU fines Google nearly 3 billion euros over online advertising practices
The European Commission on Friday announced a €2.95 billion fine against Google, ruling that the tech giant abused its dominant position in the online advertising sector, known as Adtech.
The decision, long anticipated, comes after an investigation that began in 2021. Google immediately announced its intention to appeal, calling the fine “unjustified” and claiming that the imposed changes could harm thousands of European businesses.
While the EU considered a potential split of Google’s Adtech operations, it decided not to enforce this measure for now, though it has left the option open if the company fails to comply with competition commitments within 60 days. European Commissioner for Competition Teresa Ribera warned that strong corrective measures would follow if necessary.
This is the third major sanction against Google in one week. The company was also ordered to pay $425.7 million in the United States for privacy violations and fined €325 million in France by the CNIL for ad and cookie-related breaches.
The EU has previously fined Google €4.1 billion in 2018 over Android and €2.4 billion in 2017 over comparison shopping services. Meanwhile, ongoing legal proceedings in the United States continue to challenge the company’s dominance in digital advertising.
