A forthcoming direct shipping service is poised to inaugurate next month, heralding a substantial uplift in trade prospects between Morocco, Libya, Tunisia, and Spain.

According to a report by the Tunis Afrique Presse Agency (TAP), this specialized container route will seamlessly connect the bustling port of Sfax in Tunisia with pivotal destinations in Morocco, Spain, and Libya.

In an interview with TAP, Malek Aloui, the spokesperson for this pioneering maritime endeavor, emphasized that final preparations are swiftly nearing completion on both administrative and logistical fronts. Barring unforeseen complications, the inaugural voyage is slated to depart from Sfax in March.

Aloui underscored the competitive advantages inherent in this service, notably its enticing pricing structures and truncated travel durations in contrast to existing indirect routes. Cargo destined for Morocco is projected to reach its destination within a mere four days, while voyages to Spanish ports are estimated to take approximately six days.

Sfax stands to reap considerable benefits from its pivotal role as the originating port of this route, with bi-monthly departures scheduled, bolstering the city's commercial engagements across the broader region.

This direct linkage aligns seamlessly with Morocco's strategic ambition to fortify its stature as a maritime trade hub in the Mediterranean. Transport Minister Mohammed Abdeljalil has previously articulated plans aimed at nurturing a robust and competitive domestic shipping fleet.

Noteworthy multimillion-dollar investments are currently underway, aimed at revitalizing Morocco's port infrastructure and augmenting its connectivity. Ambitious projects are underway to expand key facilities along both the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts while seamlessly integrating them with industrial zones via an extensive network of highways and railways.

This strategic foresight has already begun yielding dividends, with Morocco ascending to the 20th position in the latest UNCTAD maritime connectivity index. As trade burgeons, the newly established Sfax-Mediterranean route presents a welcome conduit for fostering enhanced business interactions between these burgeoning economic powers of the Mediterranean region.
