Brazil suspends Discord livestreams after teenager’s death

Brazilian authorities have suspended livestreaming on Discord following the death of a 13-year-old girl who was reportedly exposed to harmful content and incitement through a group on the platform.

The country’s data protection authority opened an investigation on August 7 after the incident, which occurred in July. Investigators found that Discord did not provide authorities with immediate access to livestream content, making it more difficult to identify potentially dangerous material in real time.

Discord said it had promptly shut down the server involved and cooperated with authorities. The company also reiterated its opposition to content encouraging violence or self-harm.

Five teenagers have reportedly been arrested in connection with the case. Brazilian authorities gave Discord three days to comply with the suspension order, while the platform has the right to appeal the decision.

Failure to comply could result in significant financial penalties, with fines potentially reaching 50 million Brazilian reais, or roughly $9.7 million, for each violation.

The suspension will remain in place until Discord demonstrates that it has introduced stronger safeguards to protect minors, including effective age-verification measures.

The case has renewed concerns about the responsibilities of online platforms in protecting children and teenagers from harmful content. Discord, which has more than 200 million monthly users and is particularly popular among gaming communities, is now facing increased scrutiny over its moderation and child-safety systems.
