Russia and China expand trade ties after 25 years of rapid growth
Trade between Russia and China has increased more than thirtyfold over the past 25 years, highlighting the rapid expansion of economic relations between the two countries. The figure was cited by the Russian and Chinese ambassadors to Japan, Nikolai Nozdryov and Wu Jianghao, in a joint article discussing the future of bilateral cooperation.
The diplomats said economic and trade relations between Moscow and Beijing have remained resilient despite external pressures and unfavorable international conditions. Bilateral trade has exceeded $200 billion annually for several consecutive years, reflecting the growing importance of the relationship for both economies.
Russia and China are expected to continue developing their economic partnership under long-term strategic agreements, including their economic cooperation plan through 2030. The two countries are also seeking to reduce the impact of external factors on bilateral trade, with national currencies playing an increasingly important role in cross-border settlements.
Energy remains one of the main pillars of the partnership. Russia and China are also expanding cooperation in industry, agriculture, transport and logistics, while seeking new opportunities in space technology, digital innovation and artificial intelligence.
The expansion of economic ties is part of a broader strategic relationship that has developed over several decades. Moscow and Beijing have increasingly emphasized the importance of long-term cooperation and coordination on major international and economic issues.
The current period also marks several important anniversaries in bilateral relations, including 30 years since Russia and China announced a new path toward a stable partnership based on equality and strategic cooperation in the 21st century. It also coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation between the two countries.
The continued growth of trade demonstrates the depth of economic links between Russia and China. With major projects planned across energy, industry, technology and logistics, both sides appear determined to further strengthen their partnership and expand economic cooperation in the years ahead.
