Greece raises fire alert as wildfires threaten several regions

Greek authorities have raised the country’s fire danger level to the highest category as wildfires continue to threaten several areas during the summer season.

According to Greek media, the regions of Attica, Argolida and Corinthia, as well as the islands of Evia and Lesvos, have been placed at the highest level on the national five-tier fire risk scale. Several other parts of the country are also facing very high fire danger.

Authorities have urged residents and visitors to avoid activities that could accidentally trigger fires, including outdoor burning, barbecues and the use of machinery capable of producing sparks.

The alert comes as Greece faces another period of hot and dry weather, conditions that can accelerate the spread of wildfires and make firefighting operations more difficult. Emergency services remain on heightened alert, while residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to follow official instructions and remain prepared for possible evacuations.

The authorities are also stressing the importance of preventing human-caused fires, particularly during periods of extreme heat and strong winds. With the fire season placing additional pressure on emergency services, precautionary measures remain essential to protect communities, forests and infrastructure.
