DR Congo declares end of latest Ebola outbreak
Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have officially announced the end of the latest Ebola outbreak, which claimed at least 34 lives since late August in the central region of the country.
Health officials stated that the outbreak has concluded, noting that transmission chains of the virus have been fully broken. The announcement was made during a ceremony in Kinshasa attended by representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
Although Ebola remains highly lethal despite advances in vaccines and treatments, the recent outbreak was relatively contained compared to previous epidemics. The most severe outbreak in the DRC, between 2018 and 2020, resulted in nearly 2,300 deaths among 3,500 cases.
Since the virus was first identified in 1976 in what was then Zaire, the DRC has faced sixteen Ebola outbreaks. Vaccination efforts began in mid-September following the International Coordination Group’s approval of an additional 45,000 doses for the country, helping to control the spread of the virus.
