Deadly eruption of mount Dukono leaves hikers missing in Indonesia
A volcanic eruption at Mount Dukono in eastern Indonesia has left at least three hikers dead and several others missing, according to local rescue authorities.
The eruption occurred early Friday morning on Halmahera Island in the North Maluku province. Officials reported that two foreign hikers and one Indonesian citizen lost their lives after the volcano suddenly released thick ash clouds and volcanic material into the atmosphere. Rescue teams are continuing search operations for ten other missing people believed to have been in the restricted area during the eruption.
Authorities said the eruption was accompanied by a loud rumbling sound and a massive column of smoke rising nearly 10 kilometers above the crater. Residents in nearby communities, including the town of Tobelo, were warned to remain alert because volcanic ash could spread across residential areas and affect public health.
Emergency officials also cautioned that the volcanic smoke and ash may disrupt transportation services and reduce air quality in surrounding regions. Medical experts often warn that prolonged exposure to volcanic ash can cause respiratory problems, especially among children and older people.
The Indonesian government had already restricted access to the volcano due to increased volcanic activity in recent months. Tourists and climbers were advised to stay at least four kilometers away from the crater area. Despite these warnings, some hikers reportedly entered the dangerous zone before the eruption occurred.
Indonesia is one of the most volcanically active countries in the world because it lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions caused by tectonic plate movements. The country regularly experiences seismic activity, forcing authorities to maintain constant monitoring of active volcanoes.
Disaster response teams continue to assess the situation around Mount Dukono while search and rescue operations remain underway.
