Deadly Assault in Afghanistan Claims 14 Lives, Targeting Shiite Community
In a tragic incident that underscores the ongoing violence in Afghanistan, gunmen killed 14 individuals in a predominantly Shiite area of central Afghanistan, marking one of the most lethal attacks in the country this year. The Taliban confirmed the attack, which also left six others injured, occurred as victims were traveling between the provinces of Ghor and Daikundi.
The Islamic State group swiftly claimed responsibility for the assault, which they executed using a machine gun. Their announcement suggested an even higher death toll than reported by the Taliban. According to Iranian news agency IRNA, Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani stated that the attackers specifically targeted individuals who were welcoming Afghan Shiites returning from pilgrimage sites in Iraq. He urged immediate action to hold the perpetrators accountable.
The Islamic State's affiliate in Afghanistan has increasingly posed a challenge to the Taliban's authority, launching attacks on schools, hospitals, mosques, and Shiite communities over the past three years. In response to the attack, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid condemned the "barbaric action," asserting that it is the government's duty to safeguard its citizens and their property. Mujahid also emphasized ongoing efforts to locate and apprehend those responsible for the violence.
The United Nations mission in Afghanistan expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and called for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability for the attack, which has deeply affected the Shiite community. Earlier this month, a suicide bomber linked to the Islamic State detonated explosives at a prosecutor's office in Kabul, and in May, a motorcycle bomb killed police officers in Badakhshan province.
Richard Bennett, a U.N.-appointed rights expert for Afghanistan, voiced his alarm over the recent surge in attacks claimed by the Islamic State. He characterized the killings of Shiite Hazara individuals as "appalling" and indicative of international crimes, highlighting the urgent need for international attention and action.
As Afghanistan grapples with escalating violence, the plight of the Shiite community remains a pressing concern, with calls for justice and protection growing louder in the wake of this devastating attack.
