Airfare fuel surcharge after ticket purchase is prohibited, warns EU
The European Union has reminded airlines that adding a fuel surcharge after a ticket has already been purchased is not allowed under EU rules, even amid rising jet fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
According to the European Commission, any attempt by airlines to modify the final price of a ticket after booking may violate European regulations on unfair competition. A spokesperson, Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, stated that such additional charges “cannot be justified” once the purchase has been completed.
The clarification comes after the Spanish airline Volotea defended its practice of applying a post-purchase fuel surcharge, a policy currently under review by regulatory authorities. The issue has raised broader concerns within the aviation sector about pricing transparency and passenger rights.
The EU emphasized that ticket prices must remain fixed after confirmation, reinforcing consumer protection standards across the single aviation market.
