Peru road accident kills at least 14 after vehicle plunges into ravine

At least 14 people have been killed and five others injured after a passenger vehicle plunged into a ravine in northern Peru, according to local authorities.

The accident occurred on Thursday near Ciudad de Dios, close to the district of San Juan, approximately 800 kilometers north of Lima.

Officials said the vehicle, a passenger van carrying 19 people, veered off the road before falling into a steep precipice.

Driver and child among the victims

Authorities confirmed that the driver and a child were among those who lost their lives in the crash.

Ricardo Chilón, a representative of the San Juan municipality, said emergency responders recorded 14 fatalities and five survivors who sustained injuries.

The injured passengers received medical assistance following the accident, while emergency teams worked at the scene to recover victims and secure the area.

Investigation launched into cause of the crash

Peruvian authorities have opened an investigation to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.

Investigators are expected to examine factors including road conditions, the mechanical condition of the vehicle and any possible human error before reaching conclusions about the cause of the accident.

No official findings have yet been released.

Road safety remains a major challenge

Serious road accidents continue to occur in Peru, particularly in mountainous regions where narrow roads, steep terrain and difficult driving conditions can increase the risk of fatal crashes.

The latest tragedy highlights the ongoing importance of improving road infrastructure, vehicle safety standards and transportation oversight in remote areas of the country.

Authorities are expected to continue their investigation while providing support to the victims' families.
