Latvia's national airline airBaltic is seeking short-term financing from its bondholders as it works to stabilize its finances and reduce the risk of default, according to a company notice reviewed by Reuters.

The state-controlled carrier has called a meeting of bondholders for August 3 to discuss interim funding while it reassesses its capital structure, highlighting the growing financial challenges facing the airline.

Bondholders asked to provide interim funding

The previously undisclosed notice indicates that airBaltic is requesting temporary financing to support operations during a broader review of its balance sheet and long-term funding strategy.

The move comes as the airline faces mounting pressure in debt markets, with yields on its outstanding bonds rising sharply this week, signaling increased investor concern over the company's financial position.

The carrier currently has approximately €380 million in outstanding bonds.

Financial challenges deepen despite strategic backing

Although airBaltic benefits from state ownership and support from Germany's Lufthansa, the airline is now under pressure to strengthen liquidity while evaluating options to improve its capital structure.

The search for interim financing suggests management is prioritizing short-term financial stability as it explores longer-term solutions for its debt obligations.

Investors will closely monitor the outcome of the August meeting, which could play a key role in determining the airline's financial trajectory.

Modern fleet remains a strategic asset

Despite its financial difficulties, airBaltic operates one of Europe's youngest fleets, consisting of 55 Airbus A220-300 aircraft. The airline has positioned the aircraft as the cornerstone of its network strategy, focusing on fuel efficiency and lower operating costs.

The company has expanded its presence in the Baltic region in recent years, but challenging market conditions, financing costs and broader pressures in the aviation sector have complicated its recovery.
