Tangier ranks 622nd globally in Oxford Economics’ 2026 Global Cities Index
Tangier ranks 622nd among 1,000 cities in Oxford Economics’ 2026 Global Cities Index, with a score of 34.2 points. The Moroccan city records a mixed performance across the index’s five assessment areas, posting a notably stronger result in the environmental category while ranking lower in human capital and quality of life.
Among Moroccan cities included in the index, Tangier ranks third nationally, behind Casablanca in 384th place globally and Rabat in 445th. Other Moroccan cities featured in the ranking include Agadir, Fez, Marrakech and Meknes.
The Global Cities Index evaluates urban performance through five main dimensions: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment and governance. The framework is designed to compare cities using a combination of economic, social, environmental and institutional indicators.
Tangier’s strongest result comes in the environmental category, where it scores 78.2 points and ranks 143rd worldwide. The city is one place behind Rabat, which ranks 144th, while Casablanca stands at 274th. Meknes ranks 304th, followed by Agadir in 523rd place in the same category.
The environmental score stands out compared with Tangier’s overall position, reflecting the city’s comparatively strong performance on indicators related to environmental conditions and sustainability.
The picture is different in human capital. Tangier ranks 794th globally with a score of 24.9 points. This category considers factors including education, skills, workforce conditions and the ability of cities to attract and retain talent.
Casablanca performs significantly higher in this area, ranking 229th globally, while Rabat occupies 413th place. The differences highlight the variation between Moroccan cities when measured against specific dimensions of urban competitiveness.
Tangier also records a relatively lower position in quality of life, ranking 680th with a score of 46.1 points. Rabat ranks 579th, Casablanca 593rd, Agadir 665th and Meknes 807th. The category incorporates indicators linked to living conditions, services, infrastructure and broader social and economic factors.
On the economic dimension, Tangier scores 34.9 points, while its governance score stands at 50 points. Oxford Economics notes that governance data are based partly on national-level indicators, meaning cities within the same country can record similar or identical results in this area.
The 2026 Global Cities Index illustrates the differences in Tangier’s performance depending on the dimension being measured. Its relatively strong environmental position contrasts with lower rankings in human capital and quality of life, underscoring the varied factors used to assess the competitiveness and performance of cities worldwide.
