Thailand floods: 19 dead and 700,000 affected as Bangkok battles rising waters

Heavy flooding across Thailand has left at least 19 people dead and affected around 700,000 residents in Bangkok, according to authorities, as intense rainfall continues to disrupt communities and essential services in several provinces.

The Ministry of Public Health reported fatalities across 23 provinces and said 49 healthcare facilities had been affected by the floods. According to Thai Enquirer, most of the reported deaths were linked to drowning or electrocution, highlighting the risks facing residents as floodwaters spread through populated areas.

Emergency measures extended around Bangkok

In response to the worsening conditions, the Thai government announced two exceptional public holidays covering Bangkok and neighboring Nonthaburi. The measure is intended to help reduce movement across affected areas while giving authorities additional time to manage flooding and emergency operations.

The impact on the healthcare system has been significant. Of the 49 affected facilities, 24 continue to provide services, while three are operating only partially. Another 22 have temporarily suspended their activities, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

Rainfall eases but monsoon conditions remain

Weather conditions in Bangkok have shown some improvement, with rainfall weakening as a low-pressure system moves away from the capital. However, monsoon showers continue, particularly across eastern parts of the city.

Overnight rainfall remained substantial in several districts. Nong Chok recorded around 62 millimeters, while Lat Krabang received approximately 55 millimeters and Min Buri about 52 millimeters.

The persistent rainfall has placed additional pressure on Bangkok's drainage network, with water accumulating on roads and in residential neighborhoods.

Authorities work to accelerate drainage

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said authorities were working to reduce water levels in the city's main canals. Lowering canal levels is expected to improve the drainage of accumulated water and help limit the duration of flooding in affected districts.

The response remains focused on removing standing water while maintaining access to essential services, particularly healthcare. With monsoon rainfall continuing, authorities are monitoring conditions closely across Bangkok and other affected provinces.

The flooding has extended well beyond the capital, affecting dozens of provinces and putting pressure on local infrastructure and public services. The reported death toll and disruption to healthcare facilities underline the scale of the emergency.

While rainfall has eased in parts of Bangkok, continued monsoon activity means that the situation remains subject to further changes. Authorities are therefore maintaining drainage and emergency measures as affected communities work to recover from the flooding.
