PPS delays decision on joining Morocco’s next government
The Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) has yet to determine its political position for Morocco’s next political phase, Secretary-General Mohamed Nabil Benabdallah said in Rabat on Wednesday, following talks with appointed Head of Government Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, Benabdallah said discussions within the PPS have remained active since the elections. The party, he explained, is still assessing the political landscape before settling on a definitive approach toward the next stage.
The issue is not being considered in isolation. According to the PPS secretary-general, the party’s eventual position will also depend on developments involving other national political parties and the broader course of consultations surrounding the formation of the new government.
Internal debate remains open
Benabdallah indicated that the PPS intends to continue its internal deliberations before adopting a formal position. The party is also waiting for the current round of political consultations to conclude, with the possibility of further meetings before it assesses the options available.
The approach leaves the party's position open while discussions over the composition and direction of the next executive continue.
The meeting with El Mansouri also provided an opportunity for the PPS delegation to hear about the main orientations guiding the appointed Head of Government and the leadership of the Authenticity and Modernity Party. Benabdallah said the discussions also addressed several issues considered important by PPS members.
Focus on democracy and public life
Beyond questions surrounding the government formation process, the PPS used the meeting to reaffirm several principles it considers central to its political action.
Benabdallah highlighted the importance of strengthening democratic institutions and protecting freedoms and rights. He also pointed to the need for greater ethical standards in public affairs, an issue that continues to generate debate and concern within Moroccan society.
These themes, he suggested, will remain part of the party's considerations as it defines its position for the coming political period.
A symbolic appointment
Benabdallah also commented on the significance of El Mansouri's appointment, describing it as a major symbolic development for Morocco.
Her nomination marks the first time in the country's history that a woman has been appointed to head the government, giving the current political transition a notable institutional and historical dimension.
For the PPS, however, the immediate question remains political positioning. With consultations still underway, the party has indicated that it will wait for greater clarity before determining how it will engage with the next stage of government and parliamentary life.
