Morocco fuel prices rise as diesel crosses 16 dirhams per litre
Motorists across Morocco are facing another increase in fuel costs as a new price adjustment takes effect from the early hours of Thursday, October 1. Diesel is expected to rise by around 0.80 dirham per litre, pushing its price beyond the symbolic 16-dirham threshold. Gasoline is also set to become more expensive, with an increase of about 0.39 dirham per litre reported ahead of the latest adjustment.
The new increase follows the adjustment implemented on September 16, when diesel prices rose by 0.34 dirham per litre and gasoline by 0.27 dirham. At that time, diesel prices in Casablanca were reported at around 15.30 to 15.33 dirhams per litre, depending on the distributor.
With the October revision, diesel therefore moves into a new price range for Moroccan consumers. Recent market reporting puts the indicative level at approximately 16.10 dirhams per litre in Casablanca, although prices can differ between service stations and distribution companies.
A sustained rise since the summer
The latest adjustment comes after several successive increases recorded since the middle of 2026. Diesel has been particularly affected, with successive revisions gradually lifting pump prices after a period of relative stability.
The September 16 increase had already pushed diesel above 15 dirhams per litre in several Moroccan cities. The additional October adjustment now adds another significant burden for households, transport operators and businesses whose operating costs are closely linked to diesel prices.
Because diesel is widely used in road transport, changes in its price can also feed into logistics and mobility costs. The precise impact varies according to the sector, consumption patterns and the ability of businesses to absorb or pass on higher operating expenses.
International energy markets remain under pressure
The latest Moroccan price movement comes against a backdrop of continued volatility in international energy markets. According to El Houcine Yamani, secretary-general of the National Petroleum and Gas Union and president of the Front for the Safeguarding of Samir, international diesel prices rose sharply between the first and second halves of July 2026.
Yamani cited an increase from approximately 7.5 dirhams to 9.4 dirhams per litre-equivalent during that period, representing an increase of more than 25 percent. He also pointed to geopolitical tensions and disruptions affecting energy infrastructure, maritime routes and global energy inventories as factors contributing to pressure on refined-product markets.
The relationship between international crude prices and pump prices is not necessarily immediate or proportional. Refined-product prices, shipping costs, currency movements and the timing of imported cargoes can all influence how global market changes are eventually reflected at Moroccan service stations.
Pressure on consumers and economic operators
The new increase places fuel prices back at the center of economic concerns in Morocco. For private motorists, the immediate effect is a higher cost of filling a vehicle. For professional drivers and transport companies, the consequences can extend to operating and distribution expenses.
The October adjustment also highlights the sensitivity of the Moroccan fuel market to developments beyond the country's borders. While international energy conditions remain an important factor, the final price paid by consumers continues to depend on domestic distribution conditions and individual service stations.
For Moroccan motorists, the new threshold marks another significant stage in the recent upward movement in diesel prices, with the market entering October at a markedly higher level than it was only a few months earlier.
