Ibn Tofail University leads Morocco’s public universities in the 2026 sustainability ranking
Ibn Tofail University in Kenitra has strengthened its position in international sustainability rankings after emerging as the highest-ranked Moroccan public university in the 2026 edition of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.
The results were announced during the 2026 Sustainable University Awards ceremony held in Azerion on September 24. The Moroccan university was among the institutions recognized in an international ranking assessing the efforts of higher education institutions to integrate sustainability into their campuses, operations and academic activities.
Ibn Tofail University placed 415th worldwide, with a total score of 7,320 points. The 2026 ranking covered 2,016 universities from 110 countries, providing an international framework for comparing institutional approaches to environmental management and sustainable development.
The UI GreenMetric ranking evaluates universities across several areas related to sustainability. Its methodology considers factors such as infrastructure and facilities, energy and climate action, waste management, water use, transportation, education and research, as well as broader institutional efforts to support sustainable development.
For Ibn Tofail University, the result reflects efforts to incorporate environmental considerations into different aspects of campus life. Sustainability initiatives can involve improving the management of resources, encouraging environmentally responsible practices and integrating sustainable development into academic and scientific activities.
The university’s approach also extends beyond environmental measures. Institutional governance, research, education and community engagement are increasingly regarded as important components of sustainable higher education, as universities seek to connect their academic missions with wider social and environmental challenges.
The ranking places particular emphasis on the role of universities in promoting awareness and research related to sustainability. Higher education institutions can contribute to this objective by developing scientific projects, supporting student initiatives and incorporating environmental and sustainable-development issues into educational programs.
The performance of Ibn Tofail University also reflects the contribution of its academic, administrative, technical and student communities. Sustainable campus policies generally depend on the participation of different groups within an institution, from researchers and teaching staff to students and administrative teams.
The university’s presence in the 2026 ranking comes as sustainability becomes an increasingly important consideration for higher education institutions worldwide. Universities are facing growing expectations to reduce their environmental footprint while continuing to expand research, innovation and access to education.
For Moroccan universities, international sustainability rankings also provide an additional measure of institutional performance and visibility. The results can encourage institutions to develop new environmental initiatives while strengthening cooperation between universities, local authorities and other organizations working on sustainable development.
Ibn Tofail University’s position among the leading Moroccan public institutions therefore highlights the growing role of sustainability within the country’s higher education sector. Its 2026 ranking provides another indicator of the university’s international presence while placing its environmental and institutional practices within a broader global framework.
