Mexican contestant Fátima Bosch wins Miss Universe 2025 amid controversy

Fátima Bosch of Mexico has been crowned Miss Universe 2025 during the 74th edition of the beauty pageant held in Bangkok, Thailand. The 25-year-old emerged victorious after a dramatic month that propelled her into the global spotlight.

A victory overshadowed by controversy

Bosch became a public favorite after an incident involving Nawat Itsaragrisil, the regional director of Miss Universe in Asia and president of Miss Grand International. During a live-streamed meeting earlier this month, Itsaragrisil allegedly called Bosch "stupid," prompting widespread backlash. In solidarity, contestants from various countries walked out of the event, and the video of the exchange went viral.

Reacting to the incident, Bosch stated, "He just told me to ‘shut up’ and said many different things. I believe the world needs to see this because we are empowered women, and this platform is for our voices. No one can silence us."

Itsaragrisil later denied using the insult, attributing the misunderstanding to his Thai accent, but the damage had already been done. The Miss Universe Organization (MUO) condemned the incident, and the controversy sparked accusations of misogyny, drawing global criticism and support for Bosch.

Global solidarity and political support

The controversy reached beyond the pageant world, garnering attention from prominent figures, including Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Addressing the incident, Sheinbaum praised Bosch for standing her ground, stating, "This young woman is an example of how women should raise their voices. Women are more beautiful when they speak up and claim their rights."

Sheinbaum also reflected on societal pressures for women to remain silent, adding, "We’ve often been told, ‘Stay quiet, you look prettier.’ Women look their best when they participate and speak out."

A defining moment for Miss Universe

Miss Universe, often referred to as the "Super Bowl" of beauty pageants, attracts millions of viewers annually. Contestants are chosen through national competitions licensed by the MUO. This year’s pageant saw Praveenar Singh of Thailand as the first runner-up, with Stephany Abasali of Venezuela, Ahtisa Manalo of the Philippines, and Olivia Yacé of Côte d’Ivoire completing the top five.

Bosch’s win marks a significant moment in the pageant’s history, highlighting the importance of respect and empowerment for women on a global stage.
