Qatar's 2025 Arab Cup Schedule Creates Dilemma for North African Teams
The upcoming 2025 FIFA Arab Cup in Qatar is set to create a significant scheduling challenge for North African national teams due to its overlap with another major tournament. The Arab Cup, scheduled for December 1-18, 2025, will conclude just three days before the start of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), which kicks off on December 21.
This tight scheduling is expected to particularly impact North African teams' participation strategies. Morocco, for instance, is likely to field a squad composed primarily of domestic league players, similar to their approach in the 2021 tournament where they reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Algeria on penalties.
FIFA has granted automatic qualification to several teams based on their international rankings, exempting them from the play-off round. The privileged list includes Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and host nation Qatar.
The previous FIFA Arab Cup, which served as a test event for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, featured 16 Arab national teams. Algeria emerged victorious in that edition, securing their first Arab Cup title with a 2-0 victory over Tunisia in the final.
The tournament's timing presents a strategic challenge for participating nations, particularly those from North Africa, who must carefully manage their player selections and resources across two major competitions occurring in quick succession. This situation could lead to increased opportunities for domestic league players to represent their countries at the international level.
