Fatiha El Moudni: New Mayor of Rabat, Breaking Gender Barriers
In a historic move, Fatiha El Moudni has taken on the role of mayor of Rabat, becoming the second woman to hold this esteemed position in the Moroccan capital. El Moudni's appointment represents a significant step forward for gender equality in local governance, succeeding the former mayor, Asmae Rhlalou, who resigned in February amidst considerable criticism of her leadership style.
El Moudni's candidacy received overwhelming support from the government's majority coalition, which includes the National Rally of Independents (RNI), the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), and the Istiqlal Party. In a decisive vote, the Rabat City Council expressed their confidence in her, with 66 out of 81 councilors casting their votes in her favor.
Born in Rabat in 1981, El Moudni embarked on a diverse career path that took her to various nations, including England, Korea, Germany, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates. Her international experiences have instilled in her an entrepreneurial mindset, making her a dynamic leader poised to guide Rabat toward a prosperous future.
El Moudni's achievements extend beyond her professional pursuits, earning her accolades such as the New Leader for the Future award at the Cans Montana Forum in 2015 and the African Woman Young Leader recognition in 2019. These honors underscore her exceptional accomplishments and unwavering dedication to excellence.
As El Moudni assumes her new role, the city of Rabat eagerly anticipates a fresh wave of progress and innovation under her leadership. Her rise to the mayoral office not only signifies a victory for women in leadership but also marks the beginning of a new era of inclusivity and empowerment within the realm of local governance.
