Artistic dialogue across Africa: Ines-Noor Chaqroun and Isham Delberg unite in Rabat
The opening of “The Ideologies” exhibition in Rabat has brought together prominent artistic voices from across Africa, led this year by Moroccan visual artist Ines-Noor Chaqroun and Gabonese artist Isham Delberg. Hosted at the Embassy and High Representation of the Gabonese Republic in Morocco, the event showcased the rich diversity of African contemporary art and was attended by key cultural figures, including Morocco’s Minister of Culture, Mehdi Bensaid.
A collective vision of artistic ideologies
Speaking to reporters, Ines-Noor Chaqroun emphasized that the exhibition’s title “The ideologies” reflects a collective effort to capture the inspirations and shared creative processes connecting African artists. The title emerged as a unifying symbol of collaboration across the continent.
“For me, the focus is on the inner growth of women in Africa, while for other artists, the themes expand to encompass broader cultural and external influences,” Chaqroun explained. She credited the Gabonese ambassador’s support for making the exhibition’s debut in Rabat possible, underscoring its significance in fostering cross-cultural connections.
Exploring cycles of life through organic abstraction
Based between Paris and Casablanca, Chaqroun has developed a distinctive artistic style rooted in organic abstraction. Her work navigates the interplay between body and mind, impulse and form, drawing inspiration from the cycles of life. Using circular, cellular, and ovarian motifs, her compositions resemble living organisms, reflecting her belief in the universality of the specific.
Although trained in academic painting and initially drawn to expressionism, Chaqroun’s current practice is deeply instinctive. She employs materials such as oil paint, clay, wool, and acrylic sprays to explore the porous boundaries between the organic and mechanical, structure and intuition. Her art often centers on the female body as a site of memory, renewal, and continuity, shaping what she describes as a “visual cosmogony” that mirrors the cyclical nature of existence.
A dialogue between Morocco and Gabon
The exhibition, subtitled “Une traversée à deux voix,” juxtaposes Chaqroun’s introspective, body-focused artworks with Isham Delberg’s celebrated visual narratives. Together, their contrasting approaches create a dynamic dialogue, highlighting the diversity and vibrancy of African contemporary art.
The event’s organizers hope to use this platform to foster collaboration among African artists and deepen cultural exchanges between Morocco and Gabon. The opening attracted artists, diplomats, and cultural leaders, reflecting a growing interest in strengthening artistic networks throughout the continent.
At its core, “The Ideologies” serves as a powerful testament to the transformative potential of art in bridging cultural divides. Chaqroun’s deeply personal yet universally resonant work stands as a distinctly Moroccan contribution to this expanding African conversation.
