Morocco strengthens its global connectivity with the Medusa submarine cable
The Moroccan telecom operator inwi has announced the landing of the Medusa submarine cable in Nador, marking a significant milestone in enhancing Morocco's digital infrastructure. This development positions the country at the center of vital connectivity routes linking North Africa to Europe and the broader Mediterranean region.
The Medusa cable, spanning 1,416 kilometers between Nador and Marseille, provides a high-capacity international route that complements Morocco’s existing communication links. This new connection bolsters infrastructure redundancy, enhances the reliability of international communications, and improves the resilience of Morocco’s national network in response to the growing demand for digital services and data flow.
As part of the first phase of the Medusa project, the cable will connect Marseille, Bizerte, and Nador, with full operations expected to begin in early 2026. Covering over 8,700 kilometers and linking 19 landing points across the Mediterranean, including the Maghreb, Europe, the Middle East, and Egypt, Medusa represents the most extensive connectivity system in the region.
With a capacity of up to 24 Tbps and an open-access model, the Medusa cable meets the increasing demand for bandwidth and offers new international connectivity routes. This project aligns with Morocco’s Digital 2030 strategy, which aims to establish a robust, inclusive, and innovative digital ecosystem. It is designed to support the growth of knowledge economies, cloud services, artificial intelligence, and the digital transformation of businesses and public institutions.
By integrating this state-of-the-art infrastructure, inwi reinforces Morocco’s position as a regional digital hub and strengthens its role as a key player in the country’s technological and economic progress.
