Trump files $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC
Former US president Donald Trump has filed a massive lawsuit against the British public broadcaster BBC, seeking damages totaling $10 billion over what he describes as a misleading and defamatory media report.
According to court documents submitted to a federal court in Florida, Trump accuses the BBC of intentionally manipulating video footage from one of his past speeches. He claims the edited material falsely portrayed him as directly encouraging violence, causing serious harm to his reputation both domestically and internationally.
The legal action includes claims of defamation as well as alleged violations of Florida laws governing deceptive and unfair business practices. Trump has repeatedly argued that the broadcaster deliberately altered his words in a politically motivated attempt to influence public opinion during the US election period.
The controversy centers on a current affairs program that aired edited excerpts of a speech delivered in early 2021, shortly before unrest erupted at the US Capitol. Trump maintains that the broadcast distorted the original context of his remarks.
The BBC has acknowledged editorial mistakes and issued a formal apology, but has firmly rejected the legal accusations and stated its intention to contest the lawsuit.
