White House defends Trump’s neutrality in Ukraine-Russia peace talks

The White House on Monday dismissed criticism, including from members of the Republican Party, that U.S. President Donald Trump is showing favoritism toward Russia in efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt rejected claims that Washington is biased in its mediation efforts. “The idea that the United States of America is not engaging with both sides equally in this war to bring it to an end is a complete and total fallacy,” she told reporters.

Leavitt added that Trump remains “hopeful and optimistic” about reaching a framework to end the conflict that began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
