UN report exposes systematic torture in Myanmar under military rule

The United Nations Independent Mechanism for Myanmar (IMM) has released a damning report detailing systematic torture and serious human rights violations carried out by the military government since its coup in 2021. The 16-page report reveals harrowing accounts of abuse in detention facilities, implicating senior government officials and military commanders.

Evidence of torture and abuse

The report documents chilling methods of torture, including beatings, electric shocks, strangulation, and the removal of fingernails with pliers. Children have not been spared; some have been unlawfully detained as proxies for missing family members, underscoring the regime's brutality.

Nicholas Koumjian, head of the IMM, stated: “We have uncovered significant evidence, including eyewitness testimony, showing systematic torture in Myanmar detention facilities.” The findings are based on over 1,300 sources, including witness accounts, forensic analysis, photographs, and official documents.

High-ranking officials implicated

The report identifies senior military commanders as key perpetrators of these abuses, indicating that torture is not isolated but part of a systematic practice across the country. The IMM’s work reflects on a decade of human rights violations, particularly targeting political dissidents and minority groups.

Myanmar in crisis

Since the military coup in 2021, Myanmar has been engulfed in civil war. The UN estimates that tens of thousands have been affected by violent crackdowns, with the Rohingya Muslim minority suffering particularly severe persecution. Many have fled to neighboring Bangladesh, seeking refuge from attacks and systemic discrimination.

The IMM has been monitoring human rights abuses in Myanmar since 2011, with this latest report offering a stark reminder of the ongoing crisis. However, financial constraints threaten the body’s ability to continue its vital work, as it faces budget cuts that jeopardize future investigations.

Military government silent

The Myanmar military junta has refused to comment on the accusations, remaining defiant in the face of international scrutiny. For many, this report sheds critical light on the atrocities committed under military rule, amplifying calls for justice and accountability.
