UK imposes sanctions on Sudan’s rapid support forces commanders
The United Kingdom announced on Friday sanctions against four senior commanders of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), including their deputy Abdelrahim Hamdane Dagalo. The measures target individuals accused of atrocities committed during Sudan’s ongoing civil conflict between RSF paramilitaries and the national army.
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the sanctions “strike directly at those with blood on their hands,” highlighting evidence of mass executions, famine, and the systematic use of rape as a weapon of war. The sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans to the United Kingdom.
The RSF, led by General Mohamed Hamdane Dagalo, also known as Hemetti, has been fighting Sudan’s army since April 2023. The conflict has killed tens of thousands and displaced nearly 12 million people. The takeover of El-Fasher in October by RSF forces marked a new escalation, with reports of massacres, ethnic violence, kidnappings, and sexual assaults.
Earlier this week, the United States imposed sanctions on a Colombian network recruiting fighters to support the RSF. Additionally, London announced an extra £21 million (€24 million) for urgent humanitarian aid in Sudan, raising total UK assistance to £146 million since the start of the year.
