The rising concerns over the health risks of supplements

As the pursuit of well-being increasingly shapes dietary choices, dietary supplements and functional foods are becoming an integral part of modern nutrition. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report, titled “Food Safety and Personalized Nutrition: A Spotlight on Dietary Supplements and Functional Foods,” sheds light on the emerging challenges faced by consumers, health authorities, and producers.

Dietary supplements, defined as concentrated sources of nutrients designed to complement the diet, and functional foods, known for their benefits beyond basic nutrition, are gaining significant attention. This shift reflects a growing consumer desire to take a proactive approach to their health.

However, this trend raises valid concerns. The FAO report stresses that the safety of active ingredients depends on various factors such as their origin, processing methods, and concentration levels. Moreover, potential interactions with medications, improper dosages, or the use of ingredients that have never been consumed before call for increased caution.

In this context, clear information is crucial. Maura Di Martino, the report's author, emphasizes the importance of clear labeling and rigorous safety evaluations to ensure consumer confidence. Consumers must be able to make informed choices based on reliable scientific data to avoid unnecessary risks.

Strengthening Regulatory Frameworks

The report not only assesses the current situation but also proposes actionable solutions. It reviews existing regulatory frameworks worldwide, with a focus on the needs of low- and middle-income countries. The goal is twofold: to foster innovation while protecting public health. An appropriate regulatory framework is essential to regulate these products, combat misleading claims, and safeguard public health.

Furthermore, the growth of dietary supplements and functional foods appears inevitable. However, for this development to truly benefit public health, it must be based on inclusive approaches supported by evidence. In this regard, the FAO calls for international collaboration and knowledge sharing
