Tétouan Declared Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue for 2026
The city of Tétouan has been chosen as the Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue for 2026, alongside Matera in Italy. This distinction, announced by the Union for the Mediterranean (UpM) on Thursday, celebrates the rich cultural heritage of cities and their shared vision of the Mediterranean.
The designation, awarded by the Union and the Anna Lindh Foundation, will allow Tétouan to host a year-long series of cultural events. These activities will engage local communities and foster partnerships across the Mediterranean region, according to the UpM's official statement.
Tétouan and Matera share a deep historical heritage and traditions, and this recognition highlights their commitment to promoting dialogue and mutual understanding throughout the region. The president of the Tétouan municipality, Mustapha El Bakkouri, expressed his enthusiasm, stating that the designation is a significant opportunity to showcase the city’s heritage, artists, and cultural initiatives. He emphasized that this recognition will strengthen Tétouan's connections with other cities and countries through enriching exchanges and collaborations.
El Bakkouri also acknowledged the challenges and responsibilities that come with this title, marking a turning point for the city. He expressed confidence that this opportunity would serve as a powerful tool to promote cultural diversity and enhance artistic exchanges on both national and international levels.
Nasser Kamel, the Secretary-General of the UpM, emphasized the power of culture in an era marked by divisions and tragic conflicts. He highlighted its potential to build bridges by fostering the essential dialogue needed to unite people across borders.
The cities of Tétouan and Matera, located on opposite shores of the Mediterranean, are invited to collaborate, highlighting their shared Euro-Mediterranean identities while showcasing their unique local characteristics. The 43 member states of the Union for the Mediterranean launched the "Mediterranean Capitals of Culture and Dialogue" initiative during their 7th Regional Forum in November 2022. This initiative aims to further promote the region's diversity and shared identity, contributing to better mutual understanding among its people.
