Moroccan Travel Trends: Coastal Cities Reign Supreme as International Horizons Expand

Morocco's vibrant cities and picturesque coastlines continue to captivate domestic travelers, while European destinations increasingly lure Moroccans seeking international adventures. A recent survey conducted by Sunergia, a prominent Moroccan market research firm, has unveiled fascinating insights into the travel preferences of Moroccan citizens.

The study reveals that Tangier, the bustling port city straddling the Mediterranean and Atlantic, claims the top spot as the favorite domestic destination for 38% of respondents. The allure of Marrakech, with its labyrinthine medina and vibrant souks, secures second place at 33%, while the sun-soaked beaches of Agadir attract 26% of travelers.

Rounding out the top five are Tetouan, a gem of Spanish-Moorish architecture, and Casablanca, Morocco's economic powerhouse. Other notable mentions include the capital city Rabat, the azure-hued Chefchaouen, and the mountainous retreat of Ifrane.

As Moroccans expand their horizons, European destinations are gaining popularity. Spain emerges as the top international choice, favored by 29% of respondents, followed closely by France at 27%. Italy and Turkey also feature prominently on Moroccan travelers' wish lists.

Interestingly, the survey sheds light on how Moroccans secure their accommodations. A significant 47% of respondents have never booked lodging within Morocco, preferring to find options upon arrival. This traditional approach remains prevalent, with 72% of those who do book accommodations opting to search on-site.

However, a shift towards digital platforms is evident. Nine percent of travelers now utilize hotel websites, while 7% rely on booking platforms. The trend is even more pronounced for international travel, where 27% of those booking accommodations abroad use hotel websites, and 21% turn to travel agencies or booking platforms.

These findings come at a time when Morocco is intensifying efforts to boost its tourism sector. The country witnessed a remarkable 20% increase in tourist arrivals in July compared to the previous year, welcoming 2.6 million visitors. With ambitious goals to attract over 15 million tourists in the current year, Morocco is positioning itself as a premier destination that seamlessly blends tradition with modernity.

As Sunergia aptly notes, "Summer vacations are a special time for Moroccans, where tradition and modernity meet in their choice of destinations and travel habits." This fusion of old and new not only shapes the Moroccan travel landscape but also reflects the country's evolving identity in an increasingly interconnected world.
