Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te marked one year in office by emphasizing the island’s desire for peace and dialogue with China, while stressing the importance of strengthening its defenses. Despite repeated calls for talks, China, which labels Lai a "separatist," has refused engagement and maintains sovereignty claims over Taiwan. Lai insists that only the people of Taiwan should determine their future.

Acknowledging concerns over potential military drills from Beijing on the anniversary, Lai expressed his commitment to peace, stating that war has no winners. However, he also highlighted the necessity of being ready for conflict as a deterrent. He affirmed Taiwan’s openness to cooperation with China based on mutual respect, preferring dialogue over confrontation.

In response to ongoing tensions, China’s defense ministry criticized Lai, accusing him of escalating hostility and undermining stability in the Taiwan Strait. Meanwhile, Taiwan is navigating trade challenges with the US, including potential tariffs, while pursuing economic growth through plans to create a sovereign wealth fund focused on the technology sector.

Lai also participated in the Computex trade show, engaging with leading tech companies such as Nvidia, Foxconn, and Mediatek. Recently, China conducted military exercises near Taiwan, signaling ongoing regional tensions.
