Storm Kristin forces school closures across parts of Spain
Severe weather from Storm Kristin, following Storm Joseph, has led to the suspension of classes in Spain’s regions of Extremadura, Ceuta, and 77 municipalities in Andalusia. Authorities cited heavy rain, gale-force winds, snow at low altitudes, and rough seas as reasons for halting in-person schooling.
Spain’s national weather agency, Aemet, issued special warnings, forecasting snow from 600–700 meters above sea level and strong winds across large areas. Mountainous regions faced dangerous driving conditions due to snowfall and ice, while heavy rainfall caused flooding and road closures in several provinces. Coastal areas along the Mediterranean were also placed on alert due to high waves and potential damage to seaside infrastructure.
In Andalusia, schools in parts of Almeria, Malaga, and Cadiz were closed for safety, while Extremadura suspended morning classes and decided on afternoon activities based on storm conditions. Ceuta also suspended classes amid an orange-level warning for strong winds and coastal hazards.
