Sports infrastructures: Morocco confirms its status as an international reference

Morocco is strengthening its position as a global benchmark in sports infrastructure through a continuous and ambitious modernization program, according to Spanish sports daily Marca. With the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) and the co-organization of the FIFA World Cup 2030 with Spain and Portugal, the country has embarked on a comprehensive transformation of its sports facilities.

The program, part of Morocco’s broader development vision, goes beyond stadium construction. It aims to create a sustainable sports ecosystem focused on talent development, professionalization, and elite performance. With a budget exceeding 20 billion dirhams, the initiative prioritizes new stadiums, high-performance centers, and the promotion of women’s football.

Among the nine stadiums selected for AFCON 2025, five – in Rabat, Tangier, Fez, Agadir, and Marrakech – will also host matches for the 2030 World Cup. The centerpiece of this initiative is the Grand Stade Hassan II in Casablanca, set to become the largest stadium in the world with a capacity of 115,000.

Morocco has also upgraded more than 55 training centers and over 100 FIFA-approved pitches, equipped with advanced drainage and maintenance technologies. The country is embracing the “smart stadium” era with biometric access, digital ticketing, and state-of-the-art video surveillance. Investments in the Mohammed VI Football Academy and regional talent centers are further boosting youth and women’s football.

The integration of 5G technology, intelligent surveillance, and renewable energy solutions, including solar lighting, underscores Morocco’s commitment to a sustainable and modern sports legacy, ensuring long-term benefits for future generations.
