Shooting in Manhattan office building leaves five dead, including a police officer
A gunman killed four people, including a New York police officer, before taking his own life during a shooting at a Manhattan office building on Monday evening.
The attack occurred in Midtown Manhattan at a skyscraper housing major financial firms and the headquarters of the National Football League. Security footage showed the shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, exiting a black BMW parked on Park Avenue. Armed with an M4 rifle, he entered the lobby and immediately shot NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who was working as a security guard.
Tamura continued his rampage, killing a woman and another security officer in the building’s ground floor. He then took an elevator to the 33rd floor, where he fatally shot another man before committing suicide.
Authorities reported that one additional victim remains hospitalized. Police are investigating the incident but have not determined the shooter’s motive or how he gained access to the building.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the 50-story building at 345 Park Avenue houses prominent companies, including hedge fund Blackstone, accounting firm KPMG, and Deutsche Bank. The skyscraper is located near Rockefeller Center, just south of Central Park.
Mayor Eric Adams honored Officer Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh who had moved to New York to protect lives. “Officer Islam died a hero, saving lives and protecting New Yorkers,” Adams said during a press conference.
This tragedy marks another mass shooting in New York City, highlighting the ongoing concerns about gun violence facing residents and authorities alike.
