Palestine Urges ICC Action Against Israeli Minister's "Genocide" Remarks
In a resolute move, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called upon the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant against Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. This demand follows Smotrich's inflammatory remarks suggesting that starving Palestinians in Gaza could be "justified and moral." The ministry has condemned these statements as an "explicit admission and endorsement of a policy of genocide."
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry's statement underscored the severity of Smotrich's comments, describing them as a "flagrant disregard for international law and consensus on protecting civilians and securing their basic humanitarian needs." Consequently, the ministry has urged the ICC to take immediate action by issuing an arrest warrant against Smotrich for "advocating and supporting a policy of genocide."
Moreover, Palestinian authorities have appealed to countries worldwide to denounce Smotrich's remarks and impose travel bans preventing the Israeli minister from entering their territories. This initiative aims to convey a strong message against such blatant disregard for international humanitarian law and civilian rights.
Smotrich's controversial statements were made in the context of discussing Israel's blockade on Gaza, which has pushed the territory to the brink of starvation. While acknowledging the importance of maintaining "international legitimacy" for the conflict, the finance minister claimed that Israel has "no choice" but to allow aid into Gaza. Nevertheless, he suggested that starving the two million Palestinians there could be "justified and moral" as a means to "free the hostages."
The dire situation in Gaza is highlighted by staggering figures: nearly 40,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, have been killed in the past 10 months, and over 91,600 others have been injured, according to Gaza's health authorities. The relentless bombing by the Israeli military has further hindered the distribution of the limited aid entering the territory.
While ICC prosecutors are seeking arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, they have not yet targeted Smotrich. However, the far-right finance minister has a history of making inflammatory anti-Palestinian statements that have drawn international condemnation. In one instance last year, he called for the "wiping out" of the Palestinian village of Huwara in the occupied West Bank.
The international community has swiftly responded to Smotrich's latest remarks. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and the European Union have condemned the statements and urged the Israeli government to retract and distance itself from the finance minister's words. Lammy stressed that "international law is clear – the deliberate starvation of civilians is a war crime."
Adding to the growing concerns, Israeli media outlets have published footage allegedly showing Israeli soldiers sexually assaulting Palestinian detainees at the Sde Teiman prison. Numerous reports have documented horrific abuse at the facility, including rape, torture, starvation, and extrajudicial killings. The United States has urged Israel to thoroughly investigate these allegations and hold those responsible accountable, stating that "there must be zero tolerance for sexual abuse or rape of any detainee."
As the situation develops, the Palestinian authorities' demand for an ICC arrest warrant against Smotrich and the international community's condemnation of his remarks underscore the escalating outrage over tensions and human rights violations in the occupied territories.
