New Jet2 flights revive tourism in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain

In a promising development for Spain's sherry capital, Jet2 has announced new flight routes connecting the southern city of Jerez de la Frontera with three major British cities: Birmingham, Manchester, and Leeds. This initiative, effective from May through October 31, 2025, marks a significant step in revitalizing the region's tourism sector, which has struggled since the collapse of the Thomas Cook travel group in 2019.

While recent headlines from Spain have focused on anti-mass tourism sentiments, the Andalusian region is eager to embrace British tourists once again. The loss of Thomas Cook's flights severely impacted local economies along the Cádiz coast, affecting popular destinations such as Conil, Chiclana, and Rota. As Jerez Airport sought to restore international connections, these new routes represent a vital re-establishment of access for travelers from the UK.

The arrival of Jet2 flights is expected to deliver an economic boost to the Cádiz coastline, particularly during the peak summer season. The anticipated influx of around 15,000 British visitors will provide a much-needed lift to local hotels and tourism businesses, fostering a renewed sense of vibrancy in Jerez.

Jerez de la Frontera, located within Spain's famous Sherry Triangle, is renowned not only for its exquisite sherry but also for its rich cultural offerings. Visitors can explore traditional tabancos—quaint sherry bars where one can savor the region's signature drink. The city is also home to several esteemed bodegas, where tourists can learn about the intricate process of sherry production.

In addition to its gastronomic delights, Jerez is celebrated for its flamenco heritage and equestrian excellence. The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art showcases the grace and beauty of Andalusian horses, with performances that often mesmerize audiences. For those looking to immerse themselves fully in local traditions, the Feria del Caballo, scheduled from May 17th to 24th this year, promises a spectacular display of horses, flamenco, and, of course, sherry.

Looking ahead, Jet2 plans to further enhance connectivity by introducing an additional route from Jerez to London-Stansted in 2026, aiming to double British tourist arrivals to 30,000. This strategic expansion underscores the airline's commitment to supporting Jerez de la Frontera's tourism revival and the broader economic recovery of the region.
