Multiple vehicles catch fire near red fort in Delhi, several injured
Emergency services in New Delhi responded on Monday to a fire that engulfed multiple vehicles near the historic Red Fort in the city’s old town. Firefighters reported that between eight and twenty vehicles caught fire before the blaze was brought under control.
Local media reports also mentioned an explosion, with some sources indicating casualties. According to the Press Trust of India, the blast occurred near a nearby metro station. The Indian Express and The Times of India reported that as many as eight people may have died, although official confirmation is still pending.
Authorities confirmed that several individuals were injured and are receiving medical treatment at nearby hospitals. The cause of the fire and possible explosion is under investigation, and officials have urged the public to avoid the area while emergency teams complete their operations.
The Red Fort, dating back to the 17th century, is one of India’s most iconic landmarks. It features on currency notes and is traditionally the site where the Prime Minister addresses the nation during Independence Day celebrations.
