Akhannouch: Morocco-Spain partnership as a strategic catalyst for Africa-Europe relations

Morocco’s Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, affirmed on Wednesday in Madrid that the partnership between Morocco and Spain serves as a strategic catalyst to strengthen relations between Africa and Europe.

Speaking at the conclusion of the Spain-Morocco business forum, Akhannouch described the current period as a unique window of opportunity to transform bilateral cooperation into a true accelerator of Africa-Europe ties, positioning both Morocco and Spain as natural pivots.

He highlighted Spain’s role as a European renewable energy leader and major industrial platform, while Morocco is increasingly recognized as an African hub, an export platform toward Europe, and a future green energy exporter.

Under the strategic vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco has expanded its continental engagement over the past two decades, becoming the largest African investor on the continent. Akhannouch noted that Morocco can act as a bridge for Spanish companies seeking opportunities in African countries with which it maintains deep political, diplomatic, and commercial ties.

Acknowledging the complexity of the current international context—including economic, security, and climate challenges—Akhannouch emphasized Morocco’s resilience through targeted support measures, structural reforms, and macroeconomic balance preservation.

The Prime Minister also highlighted government initiatives to enhance the business climate, such as fiscal reforms for greater transparency and competitiveness, efficient use of economic land, administrative decentralization, process digitalization, and improvements in public procurement regulations and payment terms.

Referring to the strategic Morocco-Spain partnership, Akhannouch stressed that beyond economic cycles, the relationship is structural, rooted in the interests of society, businesses, and citizens. He underlined that continuous dialogue between HM King Mohammed VI and King Felipe VI provides the partnership with stability and strategic depth.

Concluding his remarks, Akhannouch noted that both countries can jointly develop integrated energy corridors (electricity and green hydrogen), Atlantic/Mediterranean logistics corridors, and co-investments in West Africa, leveraging complementary networks, financing, and expertise.
