Hongkong launches independent probe after deadly residential fire
Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee announced on Tuesday the creation of an independent committee to investigate the massive fire that tore through a residential complex last week, leaving at least 151 people dead and raising serious concerns about building safety standards.
The blaze erupted at Wang Fuk Court, a housing complex in the Tai Po district, where several buildings were left charred and partially collapsed. The scale of the destruction shocked the city and prompted calls for rapid and transparent action from the authorities.
Speaking at an English-language press conference, John Lee emphasized that the new committee would operate independently and be chaired by a judge. “I will set up an independent committee tasked with carrying out a thorough and comprehensive investigation to reform the construction system and prevent such tragedies from happening again,” he said.
The government has pledged full cooperation with the inquiry, which is expected to examine building regulations, fire-safety procedures, and possible structural or administrative failings. Residents and community groups have urged officials not only to establish responsibility but also to implement long-term reforms to protect vulnerable populations living in aging residential blocks.
