African coaches criticize FIFA over late player release for CAN 2025

African national team coaches have expressed strong discontent with FIFA’s decision to delay the release of players for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), which will be held in Morocco from December 21 to January 18. The governing body announced that clubs will now have until December 15, instead of December 8, to release players participating in the tournament.

The delay, presented by FIFA as the result of “fruitful consultations” aimed at reducing disruptions, has sparked anger among coaches who argue that it undermines their ability to properly prepare their teams.

Mali’s coach, Tom Saintfiet, called the decision “catastrophic,” criticizing what he perceives as a lack of respect for African football. “We cannot prepare the team, play friendly matches, or finalize plans. I no longer have my players,” he said.

Similarly, Stefano Cusin, coach of Comoros, described the move as “unprofessional,” noting that national federations had already organized training camps, booked hotels, and scheduled friendly matches. Teams playing at the start of the tournament, such as Morocco and Comoros, are particularly affected.

Coaches also criticized FIFA technical director Arsène Wenger, claiming his experience with European clubs does not adequately reflect the realities of national team management. Saintfiet emphasized that a FIFA technical director should have firsthand experience with national team football.

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions between African national teams and European clubs, which hold significant sway over player availability. Veteran coach Claude Le Roy described FIFA’s decision as a “geopolitical issue,” accusing the organization of prioritizing European club interests over the development of football in Africa and other regions.
