Spain welcomes adoption of UN Resolution 2797 on the Moroccan Sahara
Spain has expressed its satisfaction following the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which reinforces the view that a credible autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty represents one of the most viable paths for resolving the Moroccan Sahara issue.
The announcement came after the 13th Spain–Morocco High-Level Meeting held on Thursday in Madrid. In the joint declaration, Spain welcomed the UN text adopted on 31 October 2025, highlighting its alignment with the current diplomatic efforts aimed at advancing a political and mutually acceptable solution.
Madrid also reaffirmed the constructive stance outlined in the Joint Declaration of 7 April 2022 between HM King Mohammed VI and the Spanish Prime Minister, a statement that marked a turning point in bilateral relations. According to Spanish officials, Resolution 2797 strengthens international backing for the efforts led by the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to guide negotiations grounded in the Moroccan autonomy initiative.
This renewed support, expressed during a major bilateral event, underscores Spain’s commitment to the UN-led political process and confirms its continued endorsement of Morocco’s proposal as a central component of the path toward a lasting and realistic settlement.
