Mozilla unveils Thunderbolt, a self-hosted AI client for enterprises

Mozilla Foundation, through its subsidiary MZLA Technologies Corporation, has introduced Thunderbolt, an open source AI client designed for organizations that want to run artificial intelligence workloads on their own infrastructure rather than relying on external cloud providers.

Thunderbolt acts as a front-end interface that allows employees to interact with large language models for chat, search, document workflows, and task automation. Its backend connects to systems selected by the organization, routing requests through an inference proxy. The platform supports providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, and OpenRouter, with plans to add compatibility with local deployment tools like Ollama.

The client is available across web, Linux, Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. It supports both frontier and locally hosted models, with a focus on data sovereignty and avoiding dependence on a single vendor. A hosted version for individual users is planned, though no release date has been confirmed.

Thunderbolt is funded through a dedicated Mozilla investment and developed by a team separate from the Thunderbird email client. While the software is freely available, MZLA aims to generate revenue through enterprise deployments, offering a new income stream beyond donation-based funding.

The launch follows a recent research partnership between Mozilla and Mila, focused on advancing open and sovereign AI systems. This aligns with growing demand for infrastructure that keeps sensitive data within organizational boundaries. Analyst firm Gartner has projected that 65 percent of governments will introduce technology sovereignty requirements by 2028.

MZLA noted that Thunderbolt remains under active development. The project is undergoing security audits and has not yet reached full enterprise readiness. Early reactions have been mixed, with some praising the concept of a self-hosted AI client and others questioning Mozilla’s strategic priorities.
