Morocco's mobile payments double as digital transformation accelerates
Morocco's digital economy continues to gain momentum, with mobile payments more than doubling over the past year, reflecting the country's rapid adoption of digital financial services and its broader ambitions in technological innovation.
Speaking at the third edition of Visa Fintech Day in Rabat, Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni highlighted the growing role of financial technology in reshaping economic activity and public services. She noted that digital finance is becoming an essential component of everyday life, driven by changing consumer habits and advances in technology.
According to the minister, mobile payment transactions in Morocco increased from 9.7 million operations in 2023 to 19.7 million in 2025, representing a total value of nearly 4 billion dirhams. The figures illustrate a significant rise in the use of digital payment solutions by individuals and businesses across the country.
The expansion of fintech services is part of a wider global trend. As digital tools become increasingly integrated into financial systems, technologies such as artificial intelligence, automation, and advanced data analytics are transforming payment services, fraud detection, risk management, and customer experience.
Despite the progress achieved, challenges remain. Expanding digital infrastructure, strengthening cybersecurity, ensuring interoperability between systems, and protecting personal data are among the priorities identified by Moroccan authorities. These issues are considered essential for maintaining public trust and supporting sustainable growth in the digital economy.
At the same time, the development of fintech presents major opportunities. Experts believe that digital financial services can help improve financial inclusion, particularly for underserved populations, while facilitating access to financing for small and medium-sized enterprises. The growing use of mobile technologies and Morocco's young, digitally connected population are also viewed as important advantages.
The government's Digital Morocco 2030 strategy and the "AI Made in Morocco" roadmap aim to strengthen national technological capabilities and foster innovation. Authorities hope these initiatives will position Morocco as a regional leader in financial technology and artificial intelligence while supporting economic growth and modernization.
As digital payments continue to expand, Morocco is seeking to build a more connected, secure, and inclusive financial ecosystem capable of meeting the needs of citizens and businesses in an increasingly digital world.
