Former Charles de Gaulle commander Olivier Lebas dies in mountain accident

Vice Admiral Olivier Lebas, a former commander of France’s aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, has died in a mountain accident at the age of 62.

Lebas, who had retired from active service and joined Airbus as a defense adviser in 2023, died on Wednesday, August 12, following a fall in the mountains.

His death has prompted tributes from senior figures in the French Navy, who remembered him as an experienced officer whose career combined operational command at sea with senior responsibilities on France’s Atlantic coast.

A career at the heart of the French Navy

Lebas spent much of his professional life serving in the French Navy, eventually reaching the rank of vice admiral of the squadron.

Among the most prominent positions he held was command of the Charles de Gaulle, France’s nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the centerpiece of its naval aviation capabilities.

He later became maritime prefect of the Atlantic, a position he held from 2020 to 2023 before moving into the private sector.

His career placed him at the intersection of military operations, naval strategy and France’s broader maritime responsibilities.

In 2023, after leaving active service, he joined Airbus as a defense adviser, continuing to work on issues connected to the defense sector.

Tributes from former colleagues

The announcement of Lebas' death was made by Vice Admiral Marc Antoine de Saint Germain, the current maritime prefect of the Atlantic and the officer who succeeded him in that position.

Saint Germain described Lebas as an exceptional sailor whose departure had come unexpectedly.

France’s Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Christophe Cluzel, also paid tribute to the former commander.

Cluzel emphasized Lebas’ long commitment to serving France and recalled his presence both in Brest and at sea. He highlighted qualities including courage, determination, humility and kindness.

The tribute reflected the reputation Lebas had built among colleagues during a career that included demanding operational assignments.

A respected naval commander

Commanding the Charles de Gaulle is among the most demanding responsibilities in the French Navy.

The carrier serves as a central platform for French naval aviation and has played a significant role in overseas military operations. Its commander is responsible not only for the ship itself but also for the coordination of complex naval and air operations involving hundreds or thousands of personnel.

Lebas’ subsequent appointment as Atlantic maritime prefect placed him in charge of major maritime responsibilities along France’s western coastline, further extending his senior leadership experience beyond the carrier.

His transition to Airbus demonstrated the continued demand for experienced military expertise within France’s defense industry.

A sudden loss

Lebas' death comes less than three years after another prominent French military figure, Army General Jean-Louis Georgelin, died accidentally during a mountain hike in the Pyrenees in August 2023.

The circumstances surrounding Lebas' death were described as a mountain fall. He died on August 12, bringing an abrupt end to the career of an officer who had spent decades in the service of France.

For the French Navy, his death represents the loss of a senior figure remembered not only for his command responsibilities but also for the personal qualities emphasized by former colleagues.

The tributes from France’s naval leadership underline the mark he left on the institution he served for much of his life.
