Burgas selected to host Eurovision Song Contest 2027

Burgas, Bulgaria’s Black Sea coastal city, will take center stage in European popular culture next year after being selected to host the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Bulgarian National Television (BNT) announced the decision on Thursday, confirming that the competition’s 71st edition will culminate in Burgas on May 15, 2027.

The selection brings one of Europe’s most watched annual live television events to a city better known for its seaside setting, cultural festivals and tourism than for hosting a competition of Eurovision’s scale.

Burgas prepares for Eurovision’s biggest night

The announcement marks a significant moment for Bulgaria, which will welcome delegations and performers from across Europe for the 2027 contest.

The EBU and BNT described Burgas as the host city in a joint announcement, formally launching preparations for an event expected to attract international attention.

Eurovision combines live music with national television audiences, large-scale stage production and an extensive international fan community. Hosting the contest therefore requires more than a venue capable of accommodating thousands of spectators.

The host city must also prepare for visiting artists, delegations, journalists and fans arriving from numerous countries.

A Black Sea setting for the 71st contest

Burgas' location on the Black Sea will give the 2027 competition a distinctive backdrop.

The city is one of Bulgaria’s major coastal destinations and has developed a strong reputation as a summer tourism and cultural hub. Hosting Eurovision in May, shortly before the peak summer season, could provide an additional international showcase for the city.

The event is also expected to place Bulgaria itself under a stronger global spotlight, as Eurovision audiences extend far beyond the countries participating in the competition.

For Burgas, the contest represents an opportunity to combine its tourism identity with a major international cultural event.

Preparations begin for May 2027

With the host city now confirmed, attention will shift toward the practical organization of the competition.

Burgas and the Bulgarian public broadcaster will have to coordinate the arrival of participating delegations, media operations, security, transport and the extensive technical infrastructure required for Eurovision.

The event's large international audience also creates opportunities for local businesses, hospitality operators and tourism services.

The final will take place on May 15, 2027, but the Eurovision calendar will extend well beyond that single evening, with rehearsals, promotional activities and preliminary competition stages expected to bring international visitors to the city beforehand.

A major event for Bulgaria

Bulgaria has previously participated in Eurovision, but hosting the contest offers a very different level of exposure.

The competition's combination of music, television and international fandom can transform its host city into a temporary global cultural destination.

For Burgas, the selection is therefore both an entertainment milestone and a tourism opportunity. The Black Sea city will have less than a year to prepare for an event that will place it at the center of Europe's music calendar.

When the Eurovision final begins on May 15, the spotlight will no longer be focused solely on the performers competing for the trophy. It will also be on Burgas, as Bulgaria's coastal city welcomes Eurovision to the Black Sea.
