Madagascar: Air France suspends flights between Paris and antananarivo amid security concerns
Air France has suspended its flights between Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport and Antananarivo until Monday, citing the deteriorating security situation in Madagascar, which has been rocked by anti-government protests for more than a week.
The airline confirmed to AFP that operations have been halted since Saturday and will remain suspended through October 13. “The resumption of flights will depend on a daily assessment of the local situation,” Air France said in a statement. Affected passengers will be notified individually and offered rebooking or refunds. “The safety of our customers and crews is our absolute priority,” the company added.
Air Austral, which operates routes between Réunion Island and Madagascar, announced it had canceled one rotation on Saturday but maintained its Sunday schedule.
The international airport in Antananarivo has warned that “some flights may experience disruptions.” While some connections to domestic destinations, Ethiopia, and South Africa have departed as planned, a flight to Seychelles/Dubai was canceled on Sunday.
The French embassy in Madagascar urged its nationals to “avoid all movement and remain at home” due to ongoing unrest. Meanwhile, a unit of the Malagasy army declared on Sunday that it had taken control of the military, an act President Andry Rajoelina condemned as an “attempted illegal power grab.”
